1998 Porsche Boxster – NW Car – Low-mileage engine

Porsche is a company that built its road-car legacy on the rear engined 911 and its predecessor the 356. That being said, many of the brand’s most successful racing cars have had their engines mounted in the middle of the car, and the more affordable 914 offered in the 1970s, was many enthusiast’s entry to the brand. As Porsche was struggling through the early 1990s, one of the strokes of genius was the 1993 Boxster Concept that made the rounds on the motor show circuit that year. The first car to be designed as a bespoke roadster since the 550 Spyder, the Boxster Concept offered a stunning shape, appealing flat-6 engines and was to be offered at a price well below a base 911. With the concept drumming up considerable buzz, Porsche developed a production-ready car that was remarkably close to the concept aesthetically, and went on sale in 1996. Known internally as the 986 chassis, the first generation Boxster was a turning point for Porsche financially and instantly became the brand’s top seller until the release of the Cayenne in 2003.

This 1998 Boxster is essentially a life-long Seattle-area car, coming up from California when it was just over a year and a half old. At the time of cataloging, the car shows 160,334 miles but is in excellent mechanical condition thanks to the recent installation of a low-mileage engine by Dobson Stuttgart. Finished in Arctic Silver with a black soft top, this Boxster sits on a set of 17” Boxster-twist wheels. The exterior is in largely good condition but does show an expected amount of wear for a car of this age. On the inside, it features the the black leather interior.

The newly-installed engine is a 2.5-liter M96 Flat-6 that is rated from the factory at 201 horsepower and allows the Boxster to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds. Although this may not be the most powerful engine to come from Porsche, it is widely regarded as one of the best sounding, with exceptional intake noise coming from the side intakes when you accelerate. This engine is then paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox which sends power through a factory limited-slip differential to the rear wheels. This Boxster is the ultimate summer fun car that offers affordable top-down motoring, with a great look, ultra-low mile engine and a nice shifting 5-speed manual – all sure to put a smile on your face every time you go for a drive.
