1990 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 Targa

Built between 1989 and 1994, the Porsche 964 represents the beginning of 911 modernization, while retaining much of the classic charm. The all-new 3.6-liter air cooled flat-6 known as the M64 was the first major revision in some time and brought on significant improvements like electronic fuel injection and introduced all wheel drive. The 964 was also the final 911 variant to be offered with the traditional, manually removable Targa roof panel, before Porsche’s transition to the panoramic glass roof with the 993.

This 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Targa is finished in black over a gray leather interior. The Targa was one of the rarest 964 variants, with the manual gearbox and all-wheel drive making it even more uncommon! For the 1990 model year, when factoring in all Targas – two and four wheel drive, manual and Tiptronic, just 158 were sold in the United States and less than 1,000 were sold worldwide. Remaining largely stock, this Targa sits on a set of D90 wheels with polished centers and black painted accents.

The gray leather interior features heated seats wrapped in Gray “draped” leather. The driver’s seat was optioned with power adjustment, seat heating and lumbar support, and cruise control was also fitted.

Sitting out back is Porsche’s now legendary 3.6-liter M64 air cooled flat-6. Rated from the factory at 247 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque, this engine feels like the perfect accompaniment for the 964 chassis and makes a great noise too. Power is then sent through a 5-speed G50 manual gearbox to all four wheels utilizing Porsche’s new for the time all-wheel drive system with adjustable torque split on a dial in the center console.

Although the 964 began ushering in the future for the 911 model line, it also saw the end of the brand’s famed Targa top which only reappeared in powered form with the 991 generation. This example is one of the rare few Tagas imported to the US and presents in very good condition throughout.
