1988 Porsche 928 S4 Coupe

The Porsche 911 has long been the brand’s halo car, but in the 1970s, there were talks of replacing the rear-engined, air cooled coupe with something aimed at a more upscale audience. What Porsche engineers came up with was a futuristic looking 2+2 coupe with a big V8 up front and a fantastically luxurious interior, known as the 928. Although it was quickly decided that the 928 would not replace the 911, it was far enough along that Porsche pressed it into production as a grand touring counterpart to the more sport-oriented 911. Never seriously intended for competition use, the 928 was designed to coddle the occupants in luxurious comfort while cruising across countries at great speed. The water-cooled V8 up front offered gobs of low-down torque and was frequently paired with a Mercedes-sourced automatic gearbox which made the car a perfect daily driver for the wealthy enthusiast. Over the model’s 18-year production run, it went through numerous revisions that ultimately moved it even further into the fast grand touring market. Although it is hotly contested what the best variants are, the later cars with dual overhead cams and more extreme aero packages are considered some of the best.

This 1989 Porsche 928 S4 is from the second to last generation of the car, and features many of the desirable updates found in the final GTS models, for a fraction of the price. This is a lifelong California car that spent the majority of its life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Finished in black over tan, the car currently shows 65,726 miles and is being offered with a clean CarFax. The S4 is fitted with a 5.0-liter DOHC V8 that produces 316 horsepower, which is sent through a 4-speed automatic transaxle to the rear wheels. With a top speed in excess of 160 mph, this car is known for feeling remarkably planted thanks to its advanced front splitter, rear spoiler and unique Weissach Axle that offers a “passive rear wheel steering system” that is designed to increase stability. The overall condition of this car is remarkable and, although not a concours show car, would make an exceptional usable classic. Owing to the care that this car saw throughout its life, the original Blaupunkt radio with cassette player remains in the dashboard and the supple tan leather is in great condition for the age. With a base price of more than $65,000 in 1988 – or nearly $200,000 in today’s money – it truly was a car built for a captain of industry, and still feels that way behind the wheel today.
