1977 Porsche 911S

The mid-1970s were a bit of an odd time for the Porsche 911. After the end of the classic long hood, small bumper cars that everybody knows and loves in 1973, Porsche needed to adapt its sports car to meet a host of new emissions and safety requirements. Colloquially known as the Impact Bumper cars, these were only offered from the 1974 through 1977 model years, just before the introduction of the SC in 1978. These cars offered a unique combination of features, retaining the narrow rear arches from the outgoing long-hood cars, but now with a 2.7-liter flat-6 replacing the 2.4 that came before it. Fueling was handled by a Bosch K-Jetronic system, and in the United States, many of these cars were fitted with options like air conditioning and a sunroof.

This 1977 Porsche 911 S is from the final year of production of these mid-year cars, and is offered in Black over a Cork (tan) Interior. This US Spec example benefits from numerous service items carried out by our shop at Dobson Stuttgart including numerous suspension items and an auxiliary belt replacement. The 1977 911 S is rated at 175 horsepower which is plenty in a car weighing less than 2,400 lbs and offers that delicate steering feel that is a signature of early 911s. Although the odometer shows over 220,000 miles, this car doesn’t smoke and pulls strong through the gears and is an absolute joy to toss around on twisty roads. Although the photos currently show the car with an aftermarket tint, that has since been removed, which really enhances the look of the car and to our eyes, makes it appear far more classic. Although these mid-year cars may not be as revered as the earlier long hoods, or as ubiquitous as the later SCs, they represent a great time in Porsche’s history from a driving standpoint and at a very reasonable price.
