1977 Porsche 911S
Porsche 911s built between 1974 and 1977 represent a unique transition point for the brand, straddling eras between the classic, long hood cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s, but before the introduction of the hugely successful 911 SC, which started in 1978. This model ushered in the famed “impact bumpers” which were fitted with only minor alterations through the production of the 3.2 Carrera, ending in 1989, along with fuel injection which eventually became the default for the model as well. These cars represent great air cooled 911 value today and still offer a very classic driving experience, at a reasonable price.
This 1977 911 S Targa is a wonderful example finished in silver over a black vinyl interior. Presented in very nice driver condition, the car shows off the classic “mid-year 911” narrow rear fenders, paired with the new for the era impact bumpers with integrated side markers. This example sits on a set of classic 5-spoke Fuchs wheels in two-tone polished and black, and features a single later flag-style mirror on the driver’s side.
Inside, black vinyl covers the seats both front and rear which is in largely good condition save for a split seam on the driver’s seat. Sit in the driver’s seat and you are met by a 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel which frames Porsche’s famed 5-gauge cluster. Right in front of the driver sits an 8,000 RPM tachometer with a 6,250 rpm redline and to its right, a 150 mph speedometer. A newer Nakamichi CD head unit is installed in the center of the dashboard but the interior is otherwise very original looking.
Powering this 1977 911 S is a 2.7-liter air cooled flat-6 that utilizes Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. In “S” guise, the 911 produced 173 horsepower and produced nice power throughout the rev range. This is then connected to a 5-speed 915 transaxle which sends power to the rear wheels. This car has been very well cared for over the years and comes with a large stack of invoices up to present for work performed at various specialty shops in the Seattle area.
For the enthusiast who wants to experience air-cooled 911 ownership but is having a hard time making the first step, this 911 S is the perfect way to dip your toe in the world. Offering great flat-6 performance and noise, paired with top-off enjoyment, this 911 Targa is ready to be driven and enjoyed for years to come.
