1969 VW Karmann Ghia Type 34 Coupe

When Volkswagen teamed up with design house Ghia and coachbuilder Karmann to develop a more premium variant of the Beetle, it was hard to see it becoming the success that it did. What began as a styling exercise, split off into multiple different models, and hundreds of thousands of units sold. Once the original Beetle-based Karmann Ghia had proven its popularity, Volkswagen wanted a new, more premium variant based on its new, Type 3 chassis to serve as the brand’s halo car. What developed was known as the Type 34 or the “Razor Edge Ghia” in some markets. Larger and more luxurious than the original Karmann Ghia, the Type 34 utilized the brand’s new 1500cc flat 4 and was both the fastest, and most expensive Volkswagen offered up to that point.

Offered between 1961 and 1969, this is a final year example of the unique Volkswagen, and is finished in an appealing shade of medium green over cream. Although the Type 34 was never officially imported to the United States, a good handful have found their way in, but when compared to the first Karmann Ghia, this is a proper rarity. Offered in wonderful driver-plus quality condition, this Type 34 represents an exciting way to get into a classic that will get questions and admirers everywhere you go, but with a running gear that is simple to maintain and service.
