1968 Porsche 912 – Ex Dick Barbour

When Porsche first debuted the 901 (later known as the 911), brand enthusiasts were disappointed by the heavier engine and higher price tag when compared to the outgoing 356. In listening to these critiques, Porsche developed a middle ground, producing a 911 that was powered by a variant of the flat-4 found in the 356, which could be offered at a significantly lower price point. Built between 1965 and 1969, the 912 became known for its tremendous efficiency and neutral handling thanks to the smaller engine sitting more inboard in the chassis.

This 1968 Porsche 912 is finished in what is arguably one of the best colors of the era – Irish Green. Purchased from LeMans class-winning driver Dick Barbour, this 912 retains a largely original appearance on the exterior but benefits from a number of modifications under the skin that make it truly great to drive. A factory 5-speed manual gearbox gives you a much more enjoyable driving experience than the standard 4-speed that came in these cars, and allows for both improved acceleration in town and more relaxed highway cruising.

While under the care of Dick Barbour, the 1600cc flat-4 was rebuilt by Graham Everett Motorsport with big-bore pistons that increase displacement to 1,7500cc. Graham Everett was the head mechanic for JLP Racing and numerous other Porsche endurance race cars through the 1970s and 1980s and now runs a successful engine building service out of a garage at Road Atlanta. This rebuild was completed in September of 2020 and has seen roughly 3,500 miles of use since its completion and pulls strong through the revs while sounding appropriately aggressive.

Under current ownership, the car has had considerable work carried out at Dobson Stuttgart including suspension work, the installation of custom GTS Classic bucket seats up front with seat belts, new Vredestein radial tires and European style headlights. The result is a car that is truly a joy to toss around on your favorite back road, with enough power to rival some of its flat-6 counterparts from the era. This car isn’t going to win any stoplight drag races, but whenever the road gets twisty, it will put a smile on your face and has more than enough power to have a ton of fun.
