1967 Porsche 912 Coupe
When Porsche first displayed the 901 (later known as the 911), enthusiasts were disappointed by the heavier engine and higher price tag, compared to the outgoing 356. In listening to these critiques, Porsche developed a middle ground, producing a 911 that was powered by a variant of the flat-4 found in the 356, which could be offered at a significantly lower price point. Known as the 912, these were built between 1965 and 1969, and became known for its tremendous efficiency and neutral handling thanks to the smaller engine sitting more inboard in the chassis.
This 1967 Porsche 912 is finished in black over black and presents as wonderful driver’s quality example. The 912 utilizes that classic early 911 shape, with chrome trim on the window surrounds, bumpers, rear engine grille and script on the rear decklid. This trim looks outstanding when paired with the 15” Fuchs 5-spoke wheels wrapped in Vredestein Sprint Classic tires to complete the vintage look. Additional features on this car include a set of under-bumper fog lights, and a driver’s side side-view mirror.
The overall condition inside is very good with new-looking correct black vinyl covering the front comfort seats and two rear passenger seats. Drop into the driver’s seat and you’re met with a 4-spoke steering wheel that frames a classic Porsche 5-gauge dash layout. With a large central tachometer, a speedometer and clock to the right along with oil temp and fuel gauge to the left. All finished in fantastic green-on-black, with chrome rings that really give off that vintage feel. Otherwise, the interior is quite simple with no radio, and heater controls between the seats.
Powering the 912 is a 1.6-liter air-cooled flat 4 that produces right around 100 horsepower. Although very similar to the flat-4 that was used in the final 356 SC, Porsche engineers decided for the 912 to sacrifice a bit of top-end for additional torque lower in the rev range. Breathing through a pair of Solex carburetors, this 912 drives well and sends power through a 4-speed manual transaxle to the rear wheels. In September, Dobson Stuttgart replaced the carb floats for easier starting, and did a fluid service on the car, along with a detail and wheel straightening, meaning this car is ready to drive and be enjoyed.
